Job shadow interview
- What qualities does a person need to possess to be in this type of position?
- The qualities that an individual should have is honesty, fairness, and compassionate. You need to be able to understand every situation and take the right action.
- Everyday is different, a new day. You work different, and have to have a different mindset in each situation. Be on your game, and make good decisions.
- I first went to McFarland High School. After high school I attended Bakersfield State, I didn’t have enough credits for a bachelor’s degree, but this school put me in the right direction.
- I use to hate the cops, I would burn out really fast in front of them. 19 or 20 I decided I’d like it, drive fast, and chase bad guys.
- Not much of taking work home. But mostly courts papers, and studying cases. If involved in a big case, then more work. You also have to do a lot of writing in this career.
- You have to go through 6 month training camp. You march, and go through practices of live situations that would occur. It is 5 days a week, and you could choose if you want to live there or not, but still go in very early.
- Yes, I am missing out on quality time with my son. I miss out on school events every now and then that I wish I could attend.
- I feel like this job will continue to be competitive. Also, constant changes to the Law and further on we will be required to wear body cameras at all times.
- You need to consider a lot of things. Basically how serious of a crime is it. I am still trained so I may still be able to help in any way possible. If it were a minor crime then I’d just be the witness.
- You can’t have any regrets. You will be a highly trained officer, but there still might be occasions where you wish you would have done things differently.
Job shadow narrative
All About my Job Shadow
I am very interested in the Law Enforcement field, I hope to be a police detective one day. With that said I decided to do my job shadow on a police officer. It was scheduled on a Monday, I chose the morning shift. It took place here in Lindsay, and I feel like four hours spent was well worth it. He is a chief of the morning shift, and considering that I feel like he knew every word he was talking about.
As soon as I walked in the police department, they went on to take me to the back of the room. There, they were typing reports and I kind of got to look at what occurs behind the scenes. I was shown around, they showed me this room and I was informed they had someone locked up there the night prior. Throughout the day we mostly just drove around lindsay looking for anybody causing some trouble. I then asked many questions and got many quality answers from him. The police officer only received one call throughout the day of a person scared of a pitbull outside his house, that was about it. We also were searching for a guy that may have been a suspect to a case, but failed to locate him. He did say that that day wasn’t one of the busy days that they usually have. Out of the all the information he provided me, this stuck the most, “ You’re always going to look back and feel like you should have done something different, that’s why just keep moving forward.”
I feel like without this job shadow I wouldn’t have learned everything I now know, including with research. All of this is from his point of view. I learned plenty…. I learned you need to possess certain skills and qualities to work in the Law Enforcement field, one of them being compassionate. Also having a clean record, and being mentally stable. I too was informed that everyday is a new day, there is no schedule. One thing that got me thinking is, not much time is left for family and friends. That is one thing I did dislike, not being able to spend quality time with your family, always being at work for long hour shifts. Also there is no weekday or weekend schedule, it’s mostly 15 days on and 15 days off, I think about it and I’m unsure if that is the kind of lifestyle I want.
I have much respect for police officers, more than I ever have. It is not easy work, and certainly not for the lazy’s. By dream is to one day be a police detective, I love all those criminal cases. In order to get where I want to be one day, I must start from the bottom, a police officer. Now, I am unsure if I really would want to be a police officer for 10 years, and then be a detective in the late years of my age. I was told that maybe with more schooling, I can go straight to work on being a detective. If that is not possible, then I will then figure out what my next move will be. Without this job shadow, and the valuable information from the police officer, I would have not known.
